Dan Liu

Dr Dan Liu is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) within the Faculty of Health at the University of Technology Sydney. She holds a PhD in Economics from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Italy, and has extensive international experience from previous positions at the University of York (UK), World Health Organization (Switzerland), and Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (China).

Dr Liu specializes in econometrics modeling using large patient-level data, with research interests spanning health policy and program evaluation, competition policy, cancer care, mental health, digital health, and climate change. Her work combines health economics with public health approaches to address complex healthcare system challenges across multiple continents. Her methodological expertise includes spatial econometrics, evaluation of complex interventions, and analysis of healthcare financing systems.

Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a strong focus on evaluating real-world interventions (particularly the Victorian Healthy Homes Program), analyzing healthcare costs and access issues (especially in radiation oncology), and examining the relationship between socioeconomic factors and health outcomes. Her research demonstrates consistent application of rigorous econometric methods to policy-relevant questions in health systems across Australia, England, and China.

Dr Liu has secured significant research funding from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care and Cancer Australia for health and pharmaco-economic technical services. Her scholarly contributions have been presented at numerous conferences from 2014-2019 on topics including healthcare financing, service delivery models, and the economic determinants of health.

She actively contributes to academic training through teaching Introductory Health Economics and STATA, and supervising PhD students, demonstrating her commitment to developing the next generation of health economists and researchers.
