About
Dr. Céline Coderey serves as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Science, Technology, and Society Cluster at the Asia Research Institute and as a Fellow at Tembusu College, National University of Singapore. Her academic work bridges anthropology and health studies with a regional focus on Myanmar (Burma), examining the interplay between traditional healing systems and biomedical practices amid socio-political transformations.
She earned her Master of Arts and PhD in Anthropology from the University of Provence, Aix-Marseille 1 (France), establishing her foundation in cultural anthropology and health systems analysis.
Dr. Coderey's research investigates conceptions of health and disease in Arakan (Burma), analyzing therapeutic practices derived from Theravada Buddhism, astrology, traditional medicine, alchemy, and local spirit cults. She examines how political and social changes in Myanmar reshape healing practices and health-seeking behaviors, with particular emphasis on reproductive and mental health systems. Her work reveals the dynamic coexistence and adaptation of traditional and biomedical approaches in contested health landscapes.
Her scientific recognition includes the competitive Swiss National Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship, which supported her research on biomedical implementation in Burma at the Centre Norbert Elias.
As an active educator, she teaches the course "Time and Life" at Tembusu College while contributing to the interdisciplinary Science, Technology, and Society Cluster at the Asia Research Institute, where she collaborates on Southeast Asian health dynamics research.
