Cédric Middel

Cédric Middel is an Assistant Professor at the Athena Institute and Network Institute within the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds an ancillary role as a Medewerker (staff member) at the Amsterdam University Medical Centre's Department of Epidemiology and Data Science from March 2025 to December 2025. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing health and well-being.

His research focuses on health promotion, cardiometabolic risk factors, and the systemic challenges in Dutch food retail systems. He employs systems analysis and action research methodologies to explore interventions in supermarkets and dietary behaviors. Recent projects include the Supreme Nudge trial on cardiometabolic risk reduction and the reflexive monitoring study of healthy food store interventions.

Middel has contributed to 13 peer-reviewed publications, including articles on innovation systems, supermarket interventions, and stakeholder interactions. His work emphasizes the intersection of public health, policy, and systemic change. He teaches 'Uitdagingen in duurzame gezondheid en zorg' (Challenges in Sustainable Health and Care) at Vrije Universiteit.

He served as a project researcher in the SUstainable PREvention of cardioMEetabolic risk through NUDGing hEalth behaviour initiative (2017–2023), focusing on behavioral nudges in health promotion. His research often involves transdisciplinary collaboration and real-world implementation challenges.
