Cynthia Tant

Cynthia Tant serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), maintaining her office in 3146 East Science Hall within the Science & Engineering Complex. Dr. Tant's research program investigates human impacts on structure and function of aquatic ecosystems throughout the southeastern United States, with particular focus on the Cahaba River. Her doctoral work at the University of Georgia examined effects of nutrient enrichment on carbon resources and associated microbial and animal consumers. She has also conducted research during teaching positions in New York, where she studied salmon migration patterns and winter lake dynamics.

Her educational background includes:

• B.S. in Biology from Birmingham-Southern College
• M.S. in Biology from the University of Alabama
• Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia

Dr. Tant's teaching portfolio spans general biology, environmental science, limnology, ecosystem ecology, and zoology. Prior to her doctoral studies, she served as a Lab Coordinator for organismal and ecology laboratories at UAB and taught introductory biology and water/wastewater treatment courses at Gadsden State Community College. As a first-generation college student herself, she maintains a strong commitment to educational accessibility and works to remove learning barriers for all students.
