Dr. Cristian Ruiz Rueda is a Professor in the Department of Biology at California State University Northridge (CSUN), where he has been since 2025. Previously, he held positions as Associate Professor with Tenure (2021–2025) and Assistant Professor (2015–2021) at CSUN, and as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College (2015–2018). His research focuses on multidrug resistance mechanisms in bacteria, antimicrobial development, and the role of efflux pumps in bacterial physiology.
- Ph.D. in Microbiology (2005), University of Barcelona
- M.Phil. in Microbiology (2001), University of Barcelona
- B.S. in Biology (1999), University of Barcelona
His lab at CSUN addresses global public health threats by studying antibiotic-resistant bacteria through multidisciplinary approaches, including molecular genetics and microbial physiology. Key research areas include:
- Novel antimicrobial development targeting multidrug resistance
- Regulation of multidrug efflux pumps and their impact on bacterial metabolism
- Identification of novel antibiotic resistance genes
Scientific awards include:
- European Mention Award for Ph.D. Thesis (2005)
- Extraordinary Ph.D. Thesis Award (2005)
