Dr Cris Edmonds-Wathen is a Senior Lecturer in early childhood and primary mathematics education at Charles Darwin University (CDU). She coordinates the Remote Aboriginal Teacher Education Program, which provides community-based teacher training for Indigenous assistant teachers in remote communities. Her research focuses on how different languages—particularly non-Indo-European languages like Australian Indigenous languages—express mathematical ideas and their integration into schooling systems. She is developing a framework for creating mathematics registers in Australian Indigenous languages and examining policies and practices related to multilingual mathematics education in Indigenous contexts.
Dr Edmonds-Wathen has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Melbourne (2016–2018) and Umeå University, Sweden (2014–2016). Her work extends to Papua New Guinea, where she has explored similar themes in cross-cultural educational settings. She is affiliated with the STEM Education Research Group, which contributed this profile.
Though no specific grants, awards, or advising details are provided here, her research emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy and the role of language in mathematical literacy, particularly in marginalized communities.
