About
Craig Harrison is a Professor of Physiology at Monash University’s Department of Physiology, affiliated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales (1999) and completed postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute. His research focuses on TGF-β proteins’ roles in skeletal muscle and female reproduction, particularly mechanisms of synthesis/activation and clinical applications in fertility and cachexia. Harrison leads several high-impact projects, including NHMRC-funded initiatives on fertility treatment innovations and cancer cachexia therapies. He is a member of ESA Council (since 2014) and Treasurer since 2017.
Research Interests:
- TGF-β Signaling: Mechanisms underlying TGF-β synthesis, activation, and clinical implications.
- Reproductive Biology: Oocyte maturation, folliculogenesis, and fertility treatment advancements.
- Muscle Wasting: Roles of TGF-β in cancer cachexia and metabolic plasticity.
Recent Article Trends: His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with studies on anti-Müllerian hormone analogs, activin-mediated muscle wasting, and oocyte-secreted factors in IVF. Projects emphasize translating discoveries into therapies for infertility and cachexia.
Grants & Awards: Multiple NHMRC and Cancer Council grants since 2016. No specific awards listed, but his grant portfolio highlights sustained research excellence.
Lab/Teams: Leads the Growth Factor Signaling Lab at Monash, collaborating internationally on TGF-β biology and reproductive health.
