Gallagher's research focuses on Scots' influence on religion and economy in the Americas, with particular emphasis on capitalism's entanglement with Protestantism. His work traces networks of Scottish traders and settlers in colonial North America, examining how religious ideologies shaped economic practices and vice versa. Current projects include a book on the Scottish Darien Scheme and a study of northern New England during the Revolutionary War's aftermath. His archival research spans institutions like the Huntington Library and Colonial Williamsburg.
Recent publications include analyses of Scottish anti-popery campaigns and transnational Covenanter communities. Gallagher advocates for “critical empathy” in teaching, aiming to connect historical analysis with modern societal challenges. He also serves on the board of the Northeast Conference on British Studies and contributes to public history through media engagement. As a volunteer puppy raiser with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, he brings service dog puppies to campus for training.
