About
Professor Cornelia van Duijn is a leading epidemiologist at the University of Oxford's Oxford Population Health, holding a Fellowship at St Cross College. She co-leads HDR UK's Oxford Region and directs major consortia including CoSTREAM (stroke-Alzheimer link research) and MEMORABEL (gut-brain microbiome studies). Her research integrates large-scale omics data (genetic, proteomic, metabolomic) to study neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's), ophthalmological disorders (glaucoma, macular degeneration), and systemic pathologies affecting brain/eye function. She pioneered international genetics consortia like ENGAGE, CHARGE, and IGAP. Recent work focuses on cross-omics integration with brain imaging and cellular models.
Education: Studied Human Nutrition & Statistics at Wageningen University and Genetics & Epidemiology at Erasmus University Medical School. Awards include membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
Key research themes include genetic epidemiology of aging/mortality, proteogenomic risk factors for dementia, and microbiome-brain interactions. Over 300 publications highlight her work on GWAS meta-analyses, Mendelian randomization studies, and multi-omics biomarker discovery. Active in translational initiatives like the ADAPTED program targeting APOE-driven Alzheimer drug development.
Major grants include Horizon2020 funding for CoSTREAM and IMI ADAPTED. Leads large-scale cohort studies linking metabolomics, proteomics, and neuroimaging to disease progression. Advises on clinical genetics guidelines for cardiomyopathies and dementia prevention strategies.
