Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine ResearchAbout
Corinna Schrum serves as Director of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon Institute of Coastal Systems - Analysis and Modeling and holds a professorship at the University of Hamburg. She concurrently leads the Department of Matter Transport and Ecosystem Dynamics within the institute.
Her academic foundation includes a Diploma in Oceanography (1990) and Dr. rer. nat. in Geosciences (1994), both from the University of Hamburg, with theses focused on baroclinic instabilities and thermodynamic processes in the German Bight. Schrum's expertise spans interdisciplinary coastal research across adjacent seas, Mediterranean systems, enclosed seas, and estuaries, with particular emphasis on air-sea, land-ocean, and ocean-shelf coupling dynamics. She pioneered several advanced modeling frameworks including regional atmosphere-ice-ocean systems, NPZD-hydrodynamic models, and end-to-end ecosystem simulations.
Her current research examines multi-driver impacts on matter transport, marine ecosystems, and resource predictability. Schrum has significantly contributed to community resources through modeling databases distributed via ICES WGOOFE and coastDat.
She actively leads major initiatives:
- CliCCS Excellence Cluster (Steering Board Member & PI)
- HAICU-local AIM Helmholtz AI Hub (Coordinator)
- Helmholtz Excellence Network CliCCS (Coordinator)
- Reduced Complexity Models RedMod (Coordinator)
- SponGes EU Horizon 2020 project (PI)
- CHESS Sino-German Mobility Program (PI, 2020-2022)
Her project portfolio demonstrates substantial grant leadership across EU, German federal (BMBF, DFG), and international funding mechanisms, with current work increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into earth system modeling.
