Cora Lewis

Cora Lewis is a Distinguished Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health. She holds multiple academic and research appointments across UAB, including roles in the School of Medicine, Nutrition Obesity Research Center, and various health-related institutes. Her research focuses on epidemiological studies of cardiovascular health, urinary tract symptoms, osteoarthritis, sleep disorders, and health disparities, with a particular emphasis on Black populations.

Dr. Lewis received her MD from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and her Master of Science in Public Health from UAB. Her work often integrates large-scale cohort studies, such as the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study, to explore long-term health outcomes and interventions.

Her research interests span multiple disciplines, including public health, cardiology, urology, and orthopedics. She has led numerous grants investigating topics such as hypertension prevention, bladder health, and the impact of lifestyle factors on chronic diseases. Her recent publications highlight studies on bladder health in women, racial disparities in cardiovascular outcomes, and the role of sleep patterns in health.

Dr. Lewis has advised and mentored multiple graduate students, including Joseph J Crivelli, Ally Lynn Pullen, and Nazia Kabani. She actively participates in teaching epidemiology courses and has contributed to over 100 grants, reflecting her extensive collaborative and leadership roles in academia.

Her affiliations include leadership roles in the School of Public Health and involvement in interdisciplinary centers addressing aging, cancer, and metabolic diseases. Dr. Lewis's work emphasizes translational research and addressing health inequities through population-based studies and community engagement.
