Associate Professor Conor Clune is a faculty member in the School of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation at the UNSW Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and an MSc in Strategic Management from University College Dublin, and a PhD (Accounting) from the University of Amsterdam. Professor Clune is also a Member of Chartered Accountants Ireland (ACA).
Professor Clune's research focuses on the intersection of governance and accounting, with particular expertise in the governance and regulation of the accounting profession. He specializes in case-based research methods and has published extensively on topics including professional accounting bodies, social and environmental accountability, and the role of accounting in various organizational contexts. His recent work examines oligarchy in professional accounting bodies, content moderation on social media, and the disparate roles of accounting in amateur sports organizations.
His teaching interests center around financial reporting and the emergence of non-financial disclosures. He currently serves as the course coordinator for Financial Management in the Bachelor of Commerce program and is leading the development of Current Developments in Sustainable Business for the Business Sustainability and Social Impact major. Previously, he has taught intermediate financial accounting, financial statement analysis, and sustainability, accountability, and ethics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Professor Clune has received research funding including a 2019 AFAANZ Research Grant for his project on "Disrupting planned CSR-focused governance reform: the lobby against the social license to operate." His scholarly work has been published in leading journals such as Contemporary Accounting Research, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Accounting, Organizations and Society, and European Accounting Review.
Before his academic career, Professor Clune worked in the tax department of PwC Dublin where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant, and as a credit analyst for KBC Bank.
