Connie May Fowler is a distinguished author and academic, serving as the Irving Bacheller Professor of Creative Writing at Rollins College (2003-2007) and currently directing VCFA’s Novel Retreat. She holds an MA in English Literature from the University of Kansas and a BA in English from the University of Tampa. Her work focuses on magical realism, domestic violence, and socio-environmental issues in the American South.
She has authored eight books, including the acclaimed memoir A Million Fragile Bones (2017) and Before Women had Wings (1996), which won major literary awards. Her essays appear in The New York Times, London Times, and Oxford American, addressing topics like sumo wrestling and environmental advocacy.
Fowler founded Below Sea Level Workshops, the St. Augustine Writers Conference, and directed the Connie May Fowler Women Wings Foundation (1997-2003). She currently resides in Cozumel, Mexico.
