About
Dr. Colleen Stuart is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Carey Business School, where she conducts research at the intersection of collaborative work, social networks, and diversity. Her academic journey began with a BBA in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University, followed by a Ph.D. in Organizational Behaviour from the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management.
Dr. Stuart's research program has two primary strands. First, she investigates collaborative work, particularly how it is accomplished in conditions characterized by uncertainty. Her work examines the strategies and tools collaborators use to manage change while organizing interdependent work. Second, she explores women and work, focusing on how women overcome workplace barriers to achieve success and the implications of this success. The common thread across these areas is the structure of interdependent relationships—how they foster team resiliency and advance women's career opportunities. Her research spans diverse contexts from professional hockey teams to open-source software development communities.
Dr. Stuart has established an impressive publication record in top-tier journals including Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, and IEEE Software. Her work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the Dean's Award for Faculty Excellence (2019) and multiple best paper awards at major academic conferences. In 2019, she received a $100,000 Johns Hopkins Discovery Award for her interdisciplinary project 'Collaborative for Gender Equity and Empowerment in Education and Labor Systems,' which involves collaboration across multiple Johns Hopkins schools.
