Colleen Geier

Colleen Geier serves as a Professor of ASL Interpreting at Goshen College, where she trains interpreters to bridge communication gaps between Deaf and hearing communities. Her work is profoundly shaped by childhood experiences with a deaf uncle denied educational and social opportunities, fueling her advocacy for Deaf accessibility.

Dr. Geier specializes in advanced interpreting methodologies with demonstrated expertise in:

• Context-specific applications: medical settings ("Vital Signs – Interpreting in Medical Situations") and legal environments ("Introduction to Legal Interpreting")
• ASL linguistic techniques: spatial mapping, expansion strategies, constructed action/dialogue, and discourse role shifting
• Educational accessibility: optimizing independence for Deaf students through specialized instructional approaches

She maintains active membership in the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Indiana RID Chapter (ICRID), World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), and Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT). Beyond academia, she directs Luvability Ministries for disability inclusion and volunteers with animal welfare organizations while pursuing theological studies at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary.
