About
Colin Anderson serves as Assistant Professor in History and Geography and Legal Studies at The University of Tampa. A dual-qualified historian and attorney (Massachusetts Bar), he directs the university's law, justice and advocacy minor and coaches the Moot Court team while teaching U.S. Constitutional History, Legal Writing, and Mass Incarceration courses.
His academic credentials include:
- B.A., Boston College (2009)
- J.D., University of Pennsylvania Law School (2016)
- Ph.D., George Washington University (2022)
Anderson's research examines late-19th century U.S. through interdisciplinary lenses of race, criminalization, and cultural production. His work analyzes spatial representations in 'Darktown' comics and sheet music to uncover how segregation was constructed in popular imagination. Currently converting his dissertation into Culture and Containment: Race, Geographic Mobility and Popular Culture in the United States, 1845-1900, he bridges legal and historical methodologies.
His publication pattern reveals consistent focus on racial geography in Gilded Age America, using visual and musical artifacts to explore how spatial control narratives permeated mass culture. This approach integrates urban studies, critical race theory, and material culture analysis.
Honors include:
- UPenn Law School cum laude graduation
- Journal of Law and Social Change Executive Editorship
- Fellowships from Library Company of Philadelphia, Clements Library, and Jeffrey C. Kasch Foundation
As an educator, Anderson mentors through Moot Court competitions and the law/justice minor program. His research has been presented at Organization of American Historians and National Association of African American Studies conferences, supported by competitive fellowships examining historical intersections of law and spatial politics.
He actively leads The University of Tampa's Moot Court team, providing practical litigation training through regional and national competitions.
