Professor Clive Sabel is a spatial data scientist at the University of Plymouth, affiliated with the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds the academic rank of Professor of Big Data and Spatial Science and serves as Director of BERTHA, Denmark’s Big Data Centre for Environment and Health, managing over 30 researchers. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on spatial data informatics, health, and environmental science.
Research Interests: Professor Sabel’s research integrates individual-level spatial data with health and environmental studies. Key areas include epidemiological analysis of environmental exposures, urban wellbeing through lifelong environmental data, big data mining (e.g., social media and sensors), smart city technologies (e.g., GPS and smartphone sensors), and ethical issues in data privacy. His work bridges theoretical and applied domains, addressing both scientific and societal challenges.
Affiliations & Leadership: Beyond academic research, he leads major projects, including EU consortium grants and managing BERTHA. His interdisciplinary approach spans geography, environmental science, and public health, emphasizing real-world applications in urban planning and policy.
