Clifford Ando

Clifford Ando is Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor in Classics and History at the University of Chicago. His research examines religion, law, and governance in the ancient Mediterranean world, with emphasis on Roman imperial administration and legal theory.

Current projects include editing Roman Statutes: Renewing Roman Law and studying Latin as a legal language. Recent publications explore citizenship, legal pluralism, and imperial ideology across ancient empires.

Honors include election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2024) and appointment as Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University (2024-2026). Editorial leadership includes contributions to Oxford Handbooks of Roman Law.
