About
Claudio H. Slamovits is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University, located within the Faculty of Medicine. He joined the department in 2009 and holds a PhD from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. His research focuses on molecular biology and evolution of microbial eukaryotes, particularly protists, exploring how genomes and physiology evolve in response to lifestyle changes such as parasitism and symbiosis. Key projects include studying dinoflagellates (e.g., Oxyrrhis marina), apicomplexan parasites (Nephromyces), and the genomic basis of mitochondrial origins.
Slamovits collaborates with institutions like UBC, Ottawa University, and international labs. His lab members include PhD student Alexander Mora Collazos and Honours student Jacob Foster. Funding comes from the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, NSERC, CFI, and others. His lab is based at the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
