Clare Williams

Dr Clare Williams is a Lecturer at Kent Law School, University of Kent. She joined the institution in 2023 after completing an ESRC-SeNSS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 2020. Her research focuses on the intersections of law, economy, and society, with a particular emphasis on reimagining legal frameworks through the lens of Economic Sociology of Law.

Dr Williams holds degrees from the London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL), and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), where she earned her PhD in 2019.

Her research interests include:

• Economic Sociology of Law (ESL)
• Legal framing and metaphor, particularly the impact of “embeddedness”
• Legal design and visualization techniques
• International Economic Law
• Disability and the law, including her current work on “Ability Capitalism”

Dr Williams was awarded the ESRC-SeNSS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 2020.

She teaches modules such as Public Law 2, Dissertation supervision at Stage 3, and contributes to EU Law and PGR Methods. She welcomes students interested in research aligned with her areas of expertise.

Her current research includes a project with Dr Flora Renz exploring disability inclusion in remote work during the pandemic, as well as investigations into Legal Design methodologies.

Her research website, Imagining Inclusive Workspaces for Disabled People, and her blog Doing and thinking about law and economics differently highlight her commitment to accessible legal frameworks. She is also involved in professional networks such as the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA) and the Society of Legal Scholars.
