Clare Wilkinson

Clare Wilkinson is a Professor of Science Communication at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the College of Health, Science and Society and the Department of Applied Sciences. She is Director of the Science Communication Unit, leading evaluations and projects focused on bridging science and society. Her qualifications include a PhD, BSc (Hons), PGCert HE, PgDip, and FHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy).

Clare's research interests center on the relationship between science and society, media portrayals of science, and innovative public engagement strategies. She has pioneered projects such as RETHINK (EU-funded) and 'Meet the Gene Machine' (Wellcome Trust), exploring ethical communication and interdisciplinary approaches. Her work highlights the societal impacts of science, including nanotechnology, robotics, and environmental issues.

Her recent publications (2021-2024) emphasize digital media’s role in science outreach, pandemic-era public engagement, and global perspectives on science communication education. She has been recognized as a finalist for UWE Bristol’s Inspiring Leader of the Year Award (2023). Clare has supervised over 50 MSc projects, 20 undergraduate dissertations, and seven PhDs, demonstrating her commitment to nurturing future science communicators.

She has advised on grants for institutions like the ESRC, British Academy, and Swiss National Science Foundation, and contributed to evaluations for the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Eden Project. Her leadership extends to steering committees and academic roles, including series editor for the ‘Contemporary Issues in Science Communication’ book series.
