Clare Flannery

Dr. Clare Flannery is an Associate Professor at Yale School of Medicine with dual appointments in Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and Internal Medicine (Endocrinology). She specializes in endocrinology, diabetes management, and reproductive health, with a focus on endometrial cancer, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction. Her translational research explores mechanisms linking diabetes/obesity to reproductive health outcomes. Dr. Flannery holds leadership roles in the Diabetes Research Center and Endocrinology departments.

Education: B.A. in Chemistry from Wellesley College (1995), M.D. from Trinity College Dublin (2001), followed by residency at Jacobi Hospital, and Endocrinology fellowship at Yale School of Medicine. She trained in Dr. Hugh Taylor’s and Dr. Gerald Shulman’s labs, focusing on endometrial physiology and Type-2 diabetes pathophysiology.

Research Interests: Her NIH-funded work investigates endometrial cancer development, insulin signaling in obesity, and gender-affirming hormone therapy. Key areas include the impact of hyperinsulinemia on puberty timing and uterine damage from unopposed estradiol in metabolic dysfunction.

Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2016, including studies on endometrial glycogen synthesis, fibroid glucocorticoid signaling, and placental triglyceride regulation. Recent work addresses hypertriglyceridemia in pregnancy and estradiol-driven adipocyte hyperplasia.

Awards: Harold Behrman Mentorship Award (2020), NIH R01 Grant (2019), Albert McKern Scholar Award (2017), and Yale Discovery to Cure Grant (2016).

Clinical Focus: Provides expert care for diabetes, PCOS, perimenopause, and gender-affirming hormone therapy. Leads the Endometrium and Metabolism clinical trial (HIC ID 2000020045), investigating metabolic factors in endometrial health.
