About
Dr. Clare Embling is an Associate Professor in Marine Ecology and Associate Head of School for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Plymouth’s School of Biological and Marine Sciences (part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering). She leads the BSc Marine Biology and Oceanography programme and teaches modules ranging from statistical methods to marine vertebrate ecology and biological oceanography. Her research focuses on marine vertebrate ecology, conservation, habitat modeling, bioacoustics, and human impacts such as ocean noise pollution.
Dr. Embling leads the Marine Vertebrates Research Unit and collaborates with the Marine Conservation Research Group. She has pioneered studies on species like manta rays, minke whales, and grey seals, addressing conservation challenges through interdisciplinary approaches. Her work integrates citizen science, acoustic monitoring, and spatial modeling to inform marine protected area design and policy.
Her publications (2019–2024) highlight contributions to understanding animal behavior under environmental pressures, mitigating human impacts, and advancing conservation strategies. Key themes include tagging technology, habitat use dynamics, and the ecological consequences of climate events like the Indian Ocean Dipole. She actively engages in environmental impact assessments for marine renewable energy projects and advocates for evidence-based conservation practices.
