Dr. Clara-Auguste Süß is a Research Fellow and MECAM Outreach & Transfer Manager at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). She specializes in political science, with a focus on radicalization, violence research, and political transformation in the Maghreb region. Her work bridges academic research and policy dialogue through MECAM, a Tunis-based Institute for Advanced Studies in North Africa.
- Education: BA (2014) and MA (2017) in Political Science from Technical University of Dresden and Philipps University Marburg; PhD (2023) from Goethe University Frankfurt am Main on Islamist radicalization in Tunisia.
Her research spans social movements, marginalization dynamics, and democratic challenges. Key projects include analyzing socioeconomic drivers of radicalization in Egypt and Tunisia, co-escalation mechanisms in contentious politics, and the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine on the MENA region. She has contributed to policy talks on Germany-Maghreb-Sahel cooperation and fieldwork ethics.
Dr. Süß teaches seminars on the climate-conflict nexus in West Asia/North Africa and has held visiting roles at institutions like Scuola Normale Superiore (Florence) and Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (Marburg). She collaborates with PRIF and GIGA teams on peace and conflict research.
