Claire Timmins

Dr Claire Timmins is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Health at the University of Strathclyde, where she leads teaching in clinical phonetics, sociolinguistics, and speech and language therapy. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a founding member of the Clinical Phonetics Teaching Network (UK and Ireland).

Her educational background includes a PhD from Queen Margaret University on sibilant production in young people with Down's syndrome, an MPhil from Trinity College, and an MA from the University of Glasgow.

Her research focuses on creative and playful pedagogies in higher education, including the use of escape rooms, word games, and crafting for teaching anatomy and phonetics. She explores how technology and gamification can enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in innovative assessment and teaching methods, particularly in health and language sciences education. She emphasizes active learning, reflection, and engagement through digital and tactile tools.

Claire supervises undergraduate dissertations and leads multiple modules. She is actively involved in professional development, serving as an external examiner at the University of Reading and as editor of the FoNETiks Mailing List. She has led non-funded research projects on phonetics competencies and student perceptions of crafting in anatomy learning.

She is also engaged in public outreach, contributing to the Pedagodzilla podcast on teaching innovation and presenting keynotes on student engagement and programme leadership.
