Dr. Claire Bruce-Martin is an Associate Professor at Northumbria University, where she has been an academic staff member since 2005. She holds a PhD in Sport Psychology (2022), an MSc in Sport Management (2005), and a BA (Hons) in Recreation Management (1991). Claire is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and Associate Member of the Leisure Studies Association (LSA). Her office is located in the Northumberland Building at the City Campus.
Claire's interdisciplinary research focuses on:
- Application of management/leadership theory in sport contexts
- Transformational leadership across tennis coaching spectrum
- Mixed methods research design
- Sport psychology and athlete development
- Pedagogical innovation in higher education
- Interdisciplinary collaborations (aerospace medicine, rehabilitation, pediatric nutrition)
Her recent publications (2019-2022) demonstrate strong interdisciplinary focus spanning sport science, space medicine, exercise physiology, and educational methodologies. Research frequently involves collaborative projects with sports organizations and employs both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Claire currently supervises PhD student Kirsty Boak researching hydration and cognition in children. She maintains strategic partnerships with British Tennis, British Equestrian Federation, British Rowing, Cricket Australia, and Football League Education, developing accredited academic programs and CPD courses for the sports industry.
