Christy Garrison-Harrison is an Assistant Professor of History and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She also holds the title of Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New York at Buffalo.
- Education: PhD in History with a Certificate in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies from Georgia State University; MA in African American History and BA in History from Clark Atlanta University.
Her research focuses on the American South, particularly Black women’s political leadership and their influence on economically developing Black communities. She explores Black Womanist Geographies and the cultural dynamics of White American matriarchy. Secondary interests include Afro-Latinx community advocacy and Black women in colonial Europe and America.
Recent publications include institutional history work for an Emory University HBCU project and a co-authored tribute to Jacqueline Rouse, highlighting her contributions to scholarship and mentorship. Her upcoming projects examine Black women’s community activism in Atlanta and antebellum matriarchal culture.
Dr. Garrison-Harrison co-developed a roundtable series on Black Women’s activist-scholarship at Southern University, with plans to expand it to include Latinx and Indigenous scholars in the next academic year.
