Christopher Woods

Christopher Woods serves as Professor of Assyriology and Sumerology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, where he holds the Avalon Professorship in the Humanities. As Williams Director of the Penn Museum, he oversees significant archaeological collections related to his research.

Professor Woods investigates:

• Evolution of writing systems from proto-cuneiform to script
• Socio-political structures of ancient Mesopotamian societies
• Religious and administrative practices in early civilizations
• Mathematical and linguistic development in Sumer
