About
Christopher Prömel is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Economics, John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies, Free University of Berlin, where he has worked since September 2019. He completed his PhD in Economics at Free University of Berlin in July 2024 after earning his Master's degree in Economics from Humboldt University Berlin.
His research focuses on migration economics, political economy, labor economics, and economic history. Prömel investigates how major societal events like the European refugee crisis affect immigrant identity formation, how right-wing protests influence social attitudes, and how economic displacement impacts psychological well-being. His work employs rigorous empirical methods to examine causal relationships in these complex social phenomena.
Prömel's recent publications reveal a strong focus on immigrant integration and the psychological effects of economic hardship. His 2025 work examines citizenship access and discrimination perception, while his research on unemployment's 'bitter taste' demonstrates how job loss affects worker sentiment. Earlier work analyzed refugee experiences during the pandemic and the relationship between right-wing protests and xenophobia.
