Dr. Christopher B. Martin is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Ohio Dominican University (ODU), joining in 2022 after 18 years at Lamar University (LU), where he advanced to Full Professor. His research focuses on physical-organic photochemistry, studying light-molecule interactions in biologically relevant systems, bridging chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering. He has authored/co-authored 21 peer-reviewed publications and mentored over 50 undergraduate researchers and 10 Master’s students at LU.
- Education:
- Ph.D. Chemistry, The Ohio State University
- M.A. Chemistry, The Ohio State University
- B.A. Chemistry, University of Kentucky
Dr. Martin’s research interests include photochemical reactions of small biomolecules, combustion mechanisms for industrial flaring, and educational innovations in chemistry labs. His work on reduced combustion mechanisms and flare optimization aims to minimize environmental emissions, while his theoretical studies explore pterin tautomers and folic acid photodecomposition. He has also contributed to STEM education through programs like STAIRSTEP, designed to enhance retention and diversity in STEM fields.
His recent publications (2012–2022) emphasize environmental applications of chemistry, particularly in flare emissions and combustion modeling, alongside theoretical studies in bio-organic systems. His interdisciplinary approach reflects collaborations with engineering and environmental scientists.
Teaching & Mentoring: Taught 21 courses at LU, primarily organic chemistry, and integrated molecular modeling into general chemistry education. Advised 10 Master’s theses and mentored numerous undergraduates in research.
Labs/Teams: Active in environmental chemistry and photochemistry research groups, focusing on industrial combustion and biomolecular interactions.
