About
Professor Christopher M. Loughrey is Professor of Experimental Cardiology and Head of the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. He directs research at the Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, focusing on molecular mechanisms of heart failure using integrative approaches spanning single-cell physiology to whole-animal models.
His research program investigates:
- Calcium handling in cardiomyocytes
- Adverse cardiac remodeling pathways
- Therapeutic targeting of transcription factors
- Ischemia-reperfusion injury mechanisms
- Novel pharmacological interventions
Significant honors include:
- Fellowship in the Royal Society of Biology
- Elected Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
- British Cardiac Society Judge's Prize
- President's Prize from Association of Veterinary Teachers
He leads a British Heart Foundation Programme Grant investigating cardiac remodeling and mentors doctoral candidates in cardiovascular pathophysiology. His laboratory develops advanced murine models of myocardial infarction and heart failure for therapeutic discovery.
