Christopher Loy

Christopher Loy serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University, teaching Environment, Culture, & Society; Cultural Anthropology; Human Adaptation; Language and Culture; and Japanese Popular Culture.

His educational credentials include:

Dr. Loy's research centers on environmental anthropology and socio-ecological systems, with specialized focus on marine cultures, indigenous peoples, and place-based identity. His fieldwork spans Northern Japan (Ainu communities) and Chesapeake Bay (watermen societies), examining cultural adaptation to ecological disruption through frameworks of political ecology and indigenous resilience. Current projects address oyster aquaculture impacts and refugee resettlement dynamics.

Recent publications (2015-2022) reveal consistent interdisciplinary engagement across environmental history, indigenous studies, and refugee integration. His work bridges anthropological theory with practical applications in sustainability education and cultural heritage management, particularly evident in National Park Service collaborations and socio-ecological modeling research.

Dr. Loy actively contributes to academic discourse through numerous conference presentations at Society for Applied Anthropology and American Anthropological Association meetings, addressing themes of sustainability education, socio-environmental system modeling, and cultural impacts of ecological change in coastal communities.
