Dr. Christopher J. Tien is an Associate Professor and Lead Brachytherapy Physicist in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology at Yale School of Medicine, with an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor at Brown University. Board-certified by the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Tien leads brachytherapy physics at Yale-New Haven Hospital and is deeply involved in both clinical service and translational research.
Dr. Tien's research spans three interconnected domains: developing AI-driven automated treatment planning systems, creating innovative 3D-printed brachytherapy devices, and advancing computational models of radiobiological effects. His educational background includes a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Florida (2011), preceded by summa cum laude Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences from the University of Michigan (2008, 2007).
His recent publication record (2023-2025) shows remarkable productivity with numerous articles in Brachytherapy journal, focusing on AI applications, device innovation, and clinical outcomes. His work demonstrates a clear translational pathway from clinical challenges to physics solutions to patient impact.
- Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) (2024)
- University of Florida '40 under 40' (Class of 2025)
- Editor's Recognition Award as Outstanding Reviewer, Brachytherapy Journal (2019)
- Judith Stitt Award for Best physics abstract (2018)
- Plenary invited speaker at American Brachytherapy Society Annual Meeting (2018)
As chair of the national AAPM Task Group on high-dose-rate brachytherapy and former president of the Connecticut AAPM chapter, Dr. Tien plays a significant leadership role in the medical physics community. His research directly addresses clinical challenges in brachytherapy while advancing the field through innovation in AI, 3D printing, and computational modeling, with a particular focus on improving access to high-quality care for diverse patient populations.
