Christopher J. Ludwa is a Professor in the Music Department at Kalamazoo College, serving as Director of College Singers, Lux Esto Chamber Choir, and Kalamazoo Bach Festival. He leads the Bay View Music Festival as Artistic Director, overseeing a 100-voice choir, orchestras, and musical theatre productions like West Side Story and Les Misérables. He also founded Kaleidosong, a professional vocal ensemble specializing in diverse styles from classical to spirituals.
Previously, he held roles at Cuyahoga Community College as Director of Performing Arts, Indiana University conducting prestigious ensembles, and as Director of Music at The Federated Church Cleveland. He earned a doctorate in Conducting, during which he guest-conducted at Butler and Webster Universities.
His professional engagements include orchestral conducting with the Bloomington Pops and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, as well as musical theatre work with the Indianapolis Opera and Indiana Repertory Theatre. He is a leader in arts integration, collaborating with organizations like the GRAMMY Foundation and contributing to the Artful Learning School Reform Model. He has taught courses on aesthetic process and led workshops globally, including at the Banff Centre.
Ludwa is a recipient of the Lilly Endowment Fellowship, which funded his research on music and values in Ghana. He actively serves on committees for ACDA, OMEA, and other arts organizations. His advocacy extends to youth music education through OMEA competitions, high school workshops, and interdisciplinary programs like Mix and Blackbox Club.
He has revitalized historic venues such as John M. Hall Auditorium and the Indianapolis 700-seat auditorium. His artistic vision includes innovative performances like Carmina Burana with aerial dance and Cole Porter Radio Hour. He champions diverse choral literature, commissioning new orchestrations and promoting composers like Malcolm Dalglish.
