About
Dr. Christopher Humphrey is a Lecturer at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences at ETH Zürich, where he is part of the Network on the Economics of Development and Labour (NADEL). He holds a PhD in International Development from the London School of Economics (LSE). His research focuses on the evolution of development finance, particularly multilateral development banks (MDBs), and their role in global governance. His work includes advising the World Bank, MDBs, and governments such as Switzerland, the UK, and the US. He has contributed to G20 initiatives, including leading MDB reform projects during Brazil and South Africa's presidencies (2024–2025).
Before joining ETH, Humphrey worked at the World Bank’s Latin America division (2001–2008) and as a journalist in Mexico City (1994–2000). His expertise bridges academia and policy, addressing MDB capital adequacy, China’s influence in multilateral banking, and geopolitical dimensions of development finance.
Key collaborations include senior roles at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the ETH Zürich’s Center for Security Studies (CSS). His recent publications analyze MDB lending strategies, China’s multilateral initiatives, and responses to global crises like the Ukraine conflict and the pandemic.
