Dr. Christopher D. Anderson is the James Hardy Chair in Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He is a Professor specializing in abdominal organ transplantation and hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery. His clinical practice focuses on liver and kidney transplants, with leadership roles in expanding UMMC's transplant programs to include pediatric kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants. He joined UMMC in 2011, previously serving at Washington University in St. Louis, where he completed his fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery.
Dr. Anderson’s education includes an MD from Emory University, residency at Vanderbilt University, and a BS from the University of Southern Mississippi. His research explores liver transplantation outcomes, endoplasmic reticulum stress in steatotic livers, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 12 book chapters, with grants funded by NIH and other organizations.
His scientific awards include the ASTS Fellowship Certificate and editorial board roles in surgical journals. He has led studies on molecular mechanisms in liver injury, including the role of autophagy and mitochondrial calcium management. Dr. Anderson’s contributions to hepatobiliary surgery and transplant innovation have positioned UMMC as a leader in Mississippi’s high-volume liver and pancreas surgery programs.
