Christopher Britt

Christopher Britt is a Professor of Spanish at the Department of Romance, German & Slavic Studies, Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, George Washington University. His research focuses on modernity, historical avant-gardes, and the dictatorships of post-imperial Spain and post-colonial Latin America. He earned a B.A. in Spanish from Colgate University and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Princeton University.

Britt's work explores intellectual participation in national and pan-national identity formation. His notable publications include Quixotism: The Denial of Spain’s Loss of Empire (2005), Imperial Idiocy (2017), and Intellectuals in the Society of Spectacle (2021). His current project, Modern translatio imperii, examines intellectuals' roles in transferring imperial power from Spain to the U.S. in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

His research trends emphasize interdisciplinary analysis of empire, displacement, and cultural transformation. Key themes include postcolonial critique, intellectual discourse, and historical memory. He has collaborated with scholars like Eduardo Subirats and Paul Fenn on works addressing global disorder and empire politics.
