Christopher Bean

Christopher Bean is a Senior Professor and Head of Geophysics at the School of Cosmic Physics, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). Previously, he held academic roles at University College Dublin (UCD), including Professor of Geophysics and Director of the Earth Institute. His career includes visiting positions at Stanford University and Grenoble University. Bean specializes in vulcanology, seismology, and computational geophysics, with notable contributions to understanding volcanic eruptions, seismic tremor analysis, and microseismic phenomena. His research integrates field observations, computational modeling, and geophysical instrumentation.

Education: BA in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (1983, UCD), MSc in Applied Geophysics (1984, National University of Ireland, Galway), PhD in Seismology (1989, Trinity College Dublin, awarded under Prof. Brian Jacob's supervision).

Research interests focus on volcanic processes, seismic monitoring, fracture dynamics, and ocean microseisms. His work bridges theoretical models with field data, particularly in Iceland and Costa Rica, where he studies rifting events, magma dynamics, and volcanic seismicity. Recent studies emphasize helicopter tracking via seismometers and micrometre-scale deformation in geological rifting.

Scientific contributions include over 90 peer-reviewed publications, with highlights in Nature, Nature Geoscience, and Geophysical Journal International. Awards include membership in the Academy of Europe (elected 2017).

Advising: Supervised PhD students E.P.S. Eibl, D. Craig, T.S. Eyre, and J. Thun, as well as postdocs I. Lokmer and Y. Ying. His research teams collaborate internationally on projects funded by grants in geophysics and volcanology.

Labs/Teams: Leads DIAS Geophysics Department and previously directed UCD’s Earth Institute, fostering interdisciplinary research in Earth sciences.
