Christoph Gabriel

Christoph Gabriel is a Professor of Romance Linguistics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since 2015. He has held academic positions at the University of Osnabrück (2000–2006), University of Hamburg (2006–2009, 2009–2015), and declined offers at Göttingen (2009) and Bremen (2015). His research focuses on prosodic and segmental phonology of Spanish/French, syntax of Romance languages, language contact (notably Bulgarian Judeo-Spanish), third-language acquisition, and multilingualism. He leads DFG-funded projects like "Judeo-Spanish in Bulgaria: A Contact Language Between Archaism and Innovation" and participates in the Research Unit "Weak Elements in Phonology: Development, Processing, and Modality".

His collaborative work explores multilingual corpora, vowel reduction, and intonational convergence. Awards include the Tiburtius Prize (2001) for dissertation excellence.
