About
Christoffer Boström is an Associate Professor in Environmental and Marine Biology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Åbo Akademi University. His research focuses on marine ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows and coastal habitats in the Baltic Sea region, with significant contributions to understanding blue carbon storage and ecosystem services.
His research expertise spans several critical areas of marine science:
- Seagrass ecology and restoration, particularly Zostera marina communities
- Coastal ecosystem services and their valuation
- Blue carbon storage in marine environments
- Marine biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration
- Salt marsh ecology and management in Nordic contexts
- Effects of climate change on coastal ecosystem functioning
Boström's publication record demonstrates a strong interdisciplinary approach combining ecological research with practical applications for coastal management. His recent work examines sediment carbon dynamics in Baltic Sea bays, latitudinal patterns in seagrass communities, and the social dimensions of coastal management decisions.
He has secured significant research funding including the ongoing SOS: Center for Sustainable Marine Science (2024-2028), the LITORE project for Finnish coastal biodiversity protection (2022-2023), and the EU-funded MERCES project on marine ecosystem restoration (2016-2020).
Boström actively collaborates with researchers across Europe and contributes to international efforts addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals related to life below water, climate action, and sustainable communities. His work bridges scientific research and practical conservation applications for coastal decision-makers.
