Dr. Christine Marie Ruby-Scelsi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, affiliated with the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics and the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the School of Medicine. She holds dual roles as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Geriatrics at UPMC-Shadyside’s Senior Care Institute and an educator, contributing to PharmD curriculum development. Her research focuses on improving medication safety and addressing geriatric syndromes such as urinary incontinence, cognitive decline, and mobility issues in older adults. She directs the PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacy Residency Program and co-directs the Geriatric and Palliative Care Area of Concentration.
Dr. Ruby-Scelsi earned her BS Pharmacy (1990) and PharmD (1994) from the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a geriatric pharmacy residency at the Durham VA Medical Center and a research fellowship at Duke University. Her career includes roles at Duke University and the University of North Carolina, as well as directing the Durham VA Geriatric Pharmacy Residency Program.
Her awards include the 2020 Excellence in Leadership Award from AACP and 2012 Leadership in Education Award from the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. She has trained over 20 geriatric pharmacy residents and numerous pharmacy students, and her research spans medication adherence programs, polypharmacy, and geriatric pain management.
Dr. Ruby-Scelsi’s work integrates clinical practice, education, and research to advance geriatric pharmacotherapy. She contributes to initiatives like the Neurology-Psychiatry module in the PharmD curriculum and collaborates in interprofessional teams to improve patient outcomes in aging populations.
