Dr Christine Howe is a Discipline Leader and Lecturer in Creative Writing and English Literatures at the University of Wollongong's School of the Arts, English and Media. With over 15 years of tertiary teaching experience, her research focuses on ethical living in the context of climate change and respectful engagement with First Nations knowledges. She is also interested in hybrid literary forms such as lyric essays and critical/creative collaborations.
Christine holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Wollongong (2004-2009). Her creative works include the novel Song in the Dark (Penguin, 2013) and multiple short pieces in journals like Island, Griffith Review, and Cordite. She has received grants including the Storying Country project (2024-2025) and an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion grant (2023-2024).
Her teaching and supervision focus on advanced creative and critical writing topics, including post-capitalist poetics, short story cycles, and eco-critical narratives. She is an editorial board member of Swamphen: A journal of cultural ecology and actively involved in organizations like the Australasian Association of Writing Programs.
Christine’s research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to environmental humanities and decolonial writing practices, often exploring themes of hope, resilience, and cultural memory through creative and scholarly mediums.
