About
Christina Christoffersen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, specializing in the physiology of circulation, kidney and lung. Her research group focuses on apolipoproteins, lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis, with particular emphasis on the biological function of apolipoprotein M and its ligand Sphingosine-1-P.
Her educational background includes:
- High School - Science from Naestved High School (1995)
- MD from University of Copenhagen (2003)
- PhD from Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen (2006)
- DMSc from Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen (2014)
Dr. Christoffersen's research program investigates the role of apolipoprotein M in cardiovascular disease, lipid metabolism, and related conditions. Her work spans molecular mechanisms to clinical applications, with recent studies examining connections between lipid metabolism and diverse conditions including age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer's disease, and chronic kidney disease. She utilizes both basic science approaches and clinical cohort studies to advance understanding of lipid-related pathologies.
Her publication record shows a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting lipid metabolism with diverse physiological systems. Recent articles demonstrate expanding applications of apolipoprotein M research into ophthalmology, neurology, and metabolic surgery, indicating growing recognition of the systemic importance of lipid signaling pathways.
Her scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous awards:
- Multiple Young Investigator Awards from prestigious conferences
- Astrup Prize (2006)
- Overlæge Johan Boserup og Lise Boserups Hæderslegat (2010)
- Paper of the year award from the Scandinavian Society of Atherosclerosis Research (2012)
Dr. Christoffersen has successfully supervised numerous students at various levels and secured substantial research funding from major Danish foundations. She serves as daily responsible for her research group and holds leadership positions including board membership in the Scandinavian Society for Atherosclerosis Research. Her laboratory maintains active collaborations across multiple disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern biomedical research in lipid metabolism and cardiovascular disease.
