About
Professor Christian Rutz is a renowned academic in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews, specializing in animal behavior, tool use, and conservation science. He pioneered bio-logging technologies, such as miniature animal-borne cameras and proximity loggers, to study wild birds like the New Caledonian crow and Hawaiian crow. His work bridges science and policy, addressing challenges in conservation, animal tracking, and human-wildlife coexistence. He founded the International Bio-Logging Society and co-led the UN-endorsed COVID-19 Bio-Logging Initiative, which analyzes pandemic-era wildlife data. Rutz has held leadership roles at institutions like Harvard University and contributed to global initiatives such as the Bonn Convention. His research spans £3.4 million in grants and has been published in Nature and Science, earning him awards including the Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellowship and the Explorers Club 50 Award.
Education: Rhodes Scholar (Oxford), BBSRC David Phillips Fellow (St Andrews), Radcliffe Fellow (Harvard).
Research focuses on tool use evolution, bio-logging innovations, and conservation strategies. He leads the Urban Exploration Project with National Geographic, aiming to study animal behavior in urbanized landscapes. His teams collaborate globally with institutions like NASA and the Smithsonian.
