Christian R. Vogl is an Associate Professor and Head of the Institute for Organic Farming at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). He holds a Dipl.-Ing. Dr. nat. techn. and serves as the Program advisor for the Master Organic Agricultural Systems and Agroecology. His research focuses on organic farming, ethnobotany, agrobiodiversity, and participatory guarantee systems (PGS). He has held visiting researcher positions at the University of Kent's Centre for Biocultural Diversity and served as a Guest Professor at the Universidad Austral de Chile. Education and Career: Dr. Vogl has held leadership roles since 1990, including Department Head of Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Deputy Department Head at BOKU. He completed his Habilitation in 2003 and Rigorosum in 1999. Research Interests: He explores organic farming systems, cultural landscapes, and the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable land management. Key areas include agrobiodiversity in homegardens, wild plant commercialization in organic agriculture, and institutionalizing PGS. His work bridges ethnobotanical methods with policy analysis to promote equitable food systems.
Grants and Projects: Dr. Vogl leads over 50 projects, including COMBIOSERVE (EU-funded biocultural diversity assessment) and initiatives in Austria, Peru, Ethiopia, and Latin America. Recent projects focus on seed literacy revival in alpine regions and evaluating PGS effectiveness in Costa Rica and Mexico.
Awards: Recognized with prestigious awards such as the Ethnobotanist in Residence (2019–2020), Teacher of the Year (2000), and international fellowships. His contributions span academic excellence and community-based knowledge preservation.
