Christian Obinger is a Full Professor of Protein Biochemistry and Vicerector for Research and Innovation at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). He is also a Board Member and Secretary of the Complexity Science Hub, reflecting his leadership in interdisciplinary research and innovation.
His research focuses on the biochemistry of metalloproteins, especially heme oxidoreductases, and encompasses protein engineering and design. With over 250 SCI publications, his work bridges fundamental enzymology and biotechnological applications.
Obinger has led several major research programs, including the FWF-funded PhD program BioToP – Biomolecular Technology of Proteins and the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Antibody Engineering. He has managed 12 standalone FWF projects, demonstrating sustained success in competitive grant acquisition.
He served as Head of the Institute of Biochemistry at BOKU from 2010 to 2018 and continues to influence academic strategy as Vicerector. His career reflects deep commitment to research excellence, innovation, and scientific leadership.
