Chris Wolverton is the Albert M. Austin Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU). He holds a B.S. from Miami University and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. His research focuses on plant gravitropism—the directional growth response to gravity—with an emphasis on how plants perceive and respond to gravity, light, and touch signals. His lab employs advanced techniques including custom hardware/software systems for real-time image analysis and spaceflight experiments funded by NASA. Recent work includes a NASA-funded International Space Station experiment investigating gravity perception thresholds and cellular signaling mechanisms.
Wolverton is recognized for integrating student research into his projects, having mentored over 60 undergraduate researchers through tutorials, independent studies, and summer programs. He has published 16 papers since joining OWU, many co-authored with students. Awards include the 2023 Bishop Herbert Welch Award for Scholarly Achievement and the NASA Ames Research Center Honor Award. He serves on the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Biological Sciences Panel for space research and chairs grant review panels.
His teaching spans Plant Physiology, Cell Biology, and Genetics. Key facilities include Schimmel/Conrades Science Center lab space where he develops innovative experimental setups for gravitropism studies. Current research directions explore molecular mechanisms underlying root system architecture and space biology applications.
