Chris Simms is a Professor of Innovation Management and New Product Development at the University of Portsmouth, within the Faculty of Business & Law and the School of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation. He leads the Future of Law, Innovation and Technology Research Centre and the Agile Centre For Equitable Sustainability. His research focuses on innovation management, product development, sustainable innovation, and packaging innovation, with a particular emphasis on low/medium technology industries and the food sector. He completed his PhD (2013) on packaging management in fast-moving consumer goods.
Dr. Simms is actively involved in Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects, collaborating with firms to develop new products/services. He supervises PhD students in areas like public sector innovation and packaging innovation. His teaching includes coordinating the MSc in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship, particularly the Managing New Product Development unit.
His research has been published in leading journals such as Technovation and Research Policy, covering topics like dynamic capabilities in manufacturing ecosystems, public sector innovation in Singapore, and sustainable development goals. He has also contributed to datasets on innovation challenges in key account management and packaging development.
Notable projects include developing packaging frameworks with Innovate UK and studying resilience in SMEs during the pandemic. He is a sought-after media commentator on packaging and innovation topics, with media contributions on platforms like Bluesky and Wikipedia references.
