About
Chris Power is a Research Associate Professor at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at The University of Western Australia. He leads the Cosmological Theory group, the largest of its kind in Australia, comprising 25 staff, early career researchers, and PhD students. Nationally, he serves as a Chief Investigator of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3D (ASTRO 3D) and leads the Genesis Simulations thread with approximately 30 researchers across Australia.
Dr. Power's research focuses on computational astrophysics, particularly dark matter and galaxy formation using large-scale supercomputers. His work spans galaxy clusters, cosmic structure formation, and the physics of dark matter halos. He teaches advanced undergraduate and Master's level courses including "Astrophysical Cosmology" and "Scientific High Performance Computing".
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on dark matter simulations, galaxy cluster physics, and radio astronomy phenomena. The research shows significant contributions to understanding merger trees, splashback radii, and the nature of Odd Radio Circles. His work bridges theoretical models with observational data from major international surveys.
- Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2014-2017)
Dr. Power actively mentors PhD students and early career researchers through his leadership of the Cosmological Theory group. He has secured multiple research grants including the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3D and the Cosmic Powerhouses project investigating black hole jets. His research has received over 8,000 citations with an h-index of 43.
He chairs the HPC working group of Astronomy Australia Limited's Science Advisory Committee and contributes to major initiatives including Astronomy Data and Computing Services (ADACS) and the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). His leadership focuses on advancing computational approaches to modern astrophysical challenges.
