Chris Murphy

Chris Murphy is a Visiting Fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. He holds a B.Ec (Hons, First Class, University Medal) from the University of Sydney and an M.Ec from the Australian National University. His expertise lies in developing and using economy-wide models for macro policy analysis, macro forecasting, and tax policy analysis.

His research interests focus on Macroeconomic Modelling, Tax Policy Analysis, and Fiscal Equalisation. He developed the Murphy macro-econometric model of the Australian economy, which has been adapted for use by governments in New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Abu Dhabi. His work with the Monetary Authority of Singapore's model (MMS) has been particularly influential, serving as their flagship model since the turn of the century.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on the macroeconomic policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic, where he accurately forecasted high inflation in 2022. His work demonstrates expertise in macroeconomic modeling, tax reform analysis, and fiscal equalization systems. His research shows consistent application of economic modeling to real-world policy challenges, particularly in Australian and international contexts.

His professional experience includes extensive consulting work for government agencies including the Australian Treasury, Monetary Authority of Singapore, NSW Treasury, and Malaysian Ministry of Finance. He has led modeling teams of up to 13 people and served as a modeling adviser to various government bodies.
